The science

What could move a craft?

Start with the interaction. Then draw the boundary around everything that exchanges energy and momentum.

The useful distinction is between propellant-free and reactionless. The first can use external photons, particles or fields. The second would require a claim about acceleration without an accounted momentum exchange. Those are different scientific propositions.

01 / Light carries momentum.

A solar sail gains momentum from incoming and redirected photons. An onboard laser can recoil by emitting photons. Both are compatible with conservation of momentum, but their power sources and force budgets differ.

Emitted beam: F = P/c
Perfect reflected external beam: F = 2P/c

The simple expressions assume a collimated beam and, for reflection, normal incidence. A sail also needs thermal management, attitude control and a survivable structure. JAXA’s IKAROS provides a flight precedent; a future laser-driven interstellar architecture remains a different engineering challenge.

02 / Boundaries change interactions.

Illustrative model · not measured data · not to scale

Casimir experiments establish forces between bodies whose electromagnetic response and geometry matter. They do not establish a way for a sealed two-plate assembly to accelerate its own center of mass. The plate supports, fields and other interacting bodies belong in the accounting.

The ideal parallel-plate pressure varies as 1/d⁴, not a universal exponential decay. It has been measured at micrometer as well as nanometer separations. Complex microcavities also cannot be assumed to add independently; scattering and material response change the calculation.

03 / Time-dependent systems need a power source.

Modulating a boundary can generate radiation, as demonstrated in superconducting-circuit experiments on the dynamical Casimir effect. The modulation supplies energy. Any radiation leaving a complete apparatus carries momentum and must be measured or bounded.

04 / Heat and nonreciprocity open a defined frontier.

Published theory studies forces in systems driven away from thermal equilibrium, including nonreciprocal materials. This is a promising direction for specifying calculations and test conditions. It involves heat flows and interacting bodies; it does not establish an isolated self-accelerating hull.

05 / Environmental fields are real momentum partners.

A current-carrying electrodynamic tether can couple to a planetary magnetic and plasma environment. An electric sail aims to deflect solar-wind particles. Both illustrate why mapping a field is only one part of the problem: a current path, coupling mechanism, resource supply and environmental conditions also matter.

06 / A residual is the start of an investigation.

Thermal recoil, cable forces, magnetic interactions and structural drift can explain apparent thrust. The historical asymmetric-cavity literature belongs in the atlas alongside stronger null measurements. The relevant question is which measured effect remains after a complete uncertainty and control analysis.

Where Alpha 1 enters

Alpha 1 currently has no supplied governing equation, coupling law, calibrated map or distinguishing force prediction in this project. Its research path starts with defining those objects. It cannot supply an engineering specification by analogy alone.
