Practical propulsion research studies engines that expel propellant. The longer-horizon program investigates whether a reproducible force remains after all ordinary momentum exchange is accounted for. Neither program has produced a Metric Flight flight-qualified engine.
What the magnetic-nozzle work contributes
Field topology, RF coupling, thermal loading and total electrical power are useful engineering questions for electric rockets. A hybrid permanent-magnet and trim-coil arrangement is a candidate for reducing coil demand. Reproducing a reference magnetic field does not establish retained thrust, net efficiency or endurance. Permanent magnets also require temperature and demagnetization margins.
The next gate is momentum closure at a reference operating point: calibrated thrust, mass flow, chamber pressure, in-source electron diagnostics and all electrical inputs measured together. A pressure sweep must test facility sensitivity. Only after that result is understood should a modified magnetic assembly be compared. Earlier interpretations that treated one pressure null as decisive evidence against hot electrons are not retained.
What the isolated-force investigation established
Whole-device accounting of moving optical boundaries and near-field momentum transfer did not supply an internal-only thrust mechanism. Quantum thermal self-propulsion in the examined literature carries momentum in emitted radiation. The central question remains the complete system, including source, actuators, supports, stored fields and escaping energy.
An explicit hypothetical scalar-field calculation explores what additional physics would be required. No such field, material coupling or usable thrust has been measured. It is a research hypothesis, not a new engine technology or an ARLO subsystem.
The next milestone is a credible measurement
Device reversal alone cannot distinguish a new force from ordinary directional radiation. A useful experiment needs a frozen prediction, independent calibration, thermal and vibration controls, measured electromagnetic leakage, full-cycle impulse and independent reproduction. An unexplained residual starts an investigation; it does not establish a drive.
Where the other routes belong
Hall and ion propulsion provide external flight-demonstrated comparison families. Electrospray addresses small, precise impulses. Chemical rockets provide a separate high-thrust option. Thermal photon recoil is real but power-limited. Electrodynamic tethers exchange momentum with a planetary plasma and magnetic environment; they are not an independent deep-space mechanism, and gasless current closure must be demonstrated for a genuinely propellant-free implementation.
