01

Maintain the intended cold state

The preliminary operating assumption is continuous cooling and controls through eclipse. Routine field shutdown every orbit is not assumed: cycling may introduce charging loss, thermal disturbance and mechanical loads. Thermal inertia may allow alternative duty cycles, but that requires a transient model and verified temperature margin.

02

Separate stored field energy from battery energy

Magnetic energy is U = ½LI². It is not available as an ordinary battery reserve without a designed recovery system. An energization event requires at least U/η input energy, plus other ramp and cooldown loads. Inductance, current, supply efficiency and permitted ramp time remain undefined; the steady-state calculator excludes this event.

03

Two reserves, different purposes

Eclipse storage covers a recurring loss of sunlight. Fault reserve covers a defined contingency such as a missed recharge opportunity or cooler switchover. The calculator includes a stated sizing margin, but does not prove any specific fault endurance or redundant-string capability. Battery capacity must also satisfy charge acceptance, discharge rate, temperature and cycle-life requirements.

04

An orderly degraded state

Define alarms and actions for rising cold-tip temperature, declining battery state of charge, failed cooling and quench detection. Preserve essential station functions and a passive crew-protection baseline. A controlled ramp-down and a quench dump are different cases; stored energy, voltage and heat discharge must have a verified destination.

05

The next model is time-resolved

Run sunlight and eclipse histories through array pointing, battery state of charge, cooler performance and thermal capacitance. Test worst-case eclipse, failed equipment and delayed recovery. No eclipse duration or default reserve on this page is a confirmed ARLO mission requirement.
