01
ARLO is not a deep-space spacecraft
An Earth-orbiting station operates within an environment affected by Earth’s magnetic field. Altitude, inclination, orbit evolution, solar conditions and mission duration change exposure. A deep-space study cannot supply an ARLO protection percentage. The station orbit and crew occupancy schedule must be frozen before a meaningful trade.
02
Separate the hazard populations
The environment study must include trapped protons and electrons, galactic cosmic rays and relevant solar energetic particles. Track species, energy and direction over time. Solar wind deflection alone is not a demonstration of protection from the high-energy particles that drive radiation design.
03
Use the existing station as the baseline
Structure, equipment, water and stores already change the radiation reaching each location. Model their actual placement and compare candidate shields against the same baseline. Include secondary particles generated when radiation interacts with station material.
04
Define the output before optimization
Choose mission-specific dose metrics, tissue or detector scoring volumes, uncertainty treatment and worst-case operations with qualified radiation specialists. Compare the same orbit, occupancy and source spectra for every design. No ARLO dose limit or medical safety certification is established by this section.
Research foundations
External work informs the study; it does not validate ARLO. Review date: 24 October 2026. Source access depth is stated below.
We are defining a research scope for radiation transport, superconducting engineering and optical-material testing. No shield is offered for sale or operational use.
